Joff's Long Distance Audax Mamtor

Here at the Quirkshop, we spend a lot of time making sure that our bikes are versatile and adaptive so that we can meet the differing needs of riders, so you can imagine how excited we were when we had the chance to build a Mamtor as the ultimate long distance audax machine.

Joff had been a big fan of our bikes for a while and for him there was no question that he wanted a Quirk, so when he came to us asking for a mudguard-ready, dynamo-rolling, fat-tyre road bike we knew our Mamtor would be the perfect due to it’s large clearances and endurance road geometry.

The dynamo - an indispensable piece of equipment to long distance audaxer’s - plays a central role in this build and you will notice there are several custom features aimed at integrating the dynamo and it’s wiring fully into the build. As Joff planned on running the dynamo permanently we specced the Aera All-Road Dynamo Fork. This allowed us to run the dynamo wiring inside the fork while also providing a mount for the front light on the fork crown, something which is usually impossible on modern carbon forks. Mounting the front light on the crown frees up valuable bar space while allowing room for bar bags. It also meant we could keep the wiring for the dynamo nice and clean.

In true audax fashion Joff intended to run mudguards permanently which meant we could then spec a guard mounted rear light. We opted for one from SON as it allowed good integration with our Velo Orange black hammered fenders. For full integration the rear light cable runs under the guard to the BB where it enters the frame and up the down tube to join at the front light. Aware that Joff may want to swap out his guards in the future we used Supernova gold cable splitters so that we can disconnect the cable without needing to pull it out the frame.

The front light is the excellent Sinewave Beacon, chosen for its ability to power at low speeds and its integration of a USB charging port. It can also be powered off an external battery if disaster should put the dynamo out of action and uniquely has a switch that can turn the light off during the day and also direct full current to the USB port.

Chris King bearings make sure this build has the ultimate service life and we went for 35mm Gravel Kings for ultimate rolling comfort. It was a lot of fun working on this build and we love it’s modern-traditional looks. Keep your eye out for it at some of the UK’s best long distance events.
